In our last post, “Do we believe Jesus or did He lie,” we looked into praying in God’s will so it is time to look even more into what it means to pray “in” God’s will.

Jesus gave us and example to pray in there will of the Father. We call it “The Lord’s prayer,” however it wasn’t His prayer BUT an example for how we are to pray and I will get into it later.

First lets look at how someone can not understand something, this too we looked at in “Fact or Speculation,” then take that misunderstanding and tell it as fact and cause many to miss the point intended.

There is a pamphlet that explains, “example of how” to set up a proper constitution. One church I was a member of had adopted this pamphlet for their constitution which met NO specific needs of the church.

This too is where we are with the prayer Jesus gave “us” as an example of “how” to pray. Before He gave us the example He was warning against doing things for show (to get praise from men).

Matt. 6: 9-13, โ€œThis, then, is how you should pray: โ€œโ€˜Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Notice in the beginning He said, how you should pray, not that this is what you are to pray. The prayer should start with an acknowledgment as to who God is, “Our Father in heaven ” here we also see that His Name is to be praised, “hallowed be Your Name.”

When talking with Moses, He told him to tell the people His name was “I am” and He definitely is the great I AM, you have a need, and need some one that can help, I AM the One that can help you.

Speaking of God, I Am can give comfort, meet all our needs, be our best friend, most wonderful Daddy ever, you name it I Am is who we need!

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” this can be also said, “May Your will be done in my life, that I will give You complete authority to do as You please with me.” Oh and mean it!

“Give us today our daily bread,” here is where we pour out our heart, insert things that we or others are in need of, physical, emotional, spiritual, He is listening so we can talk with Him as with our best friend, since He is, (I am).

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,” this part is so difficult for most of us because we don’t “want” to forgive others because “they” don’t deserve it. Had a pastor tell me once, much of his congregation didn’t realized what they had received from God.

With this particular part Jesus must have though it was VERY important since He expounded on it:

Matt. 6: 14-16, For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Many of us try to figure a way around this like, I forgive them but will never forget what they did to me. That is NOT forgiveness! We looked at this in former post: Can holding a grudge hurt me? Paul explains what forgiveness is:

Ephseians 4: 31-32, Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Does God’s Word tell me I am to have no bitterness? NO malice? That means I can’t talk about “them?” That I have to forgive “them” just like God forgave me? You don’t understand what “they” did to me.

If I forgive “like” God did it would mean I could never hold anything against “them,” I mean ain’t that how He forgave me? Can’t I at least never have anything to do with “them” again? Yeah, I know God didn’t do that, but…………..

What argument can we use against God’s Word?

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one,” We know God doesn’t tempt us that comes from satan the following may make this more understandable:

  1. Matthew 6:13 The Greek for temptation can also mean testing.
  2. Matthew 6:13 Or from evil; some late manuscripts one, / for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Whether we are thinking evil or evil one, it is still the same because evil comes from satan, the evil one! God, Jesus is the only One that can protect us from him, when we think we are stronger than him, he will take us down. But when we realize it is the One in us.

The Holy Spirit, that is stronger, and it is He that will overcome, we turn to Him when our lives go crazy and are delivered from the evil one! But why wait till our lives get that far?
