Turn in your Bibles to I Samuel 17:20-51. This well known story about David and Goliath has some insights, especially for young people, that must not be ignored.

First read verses 20-26. This passage can be summarized by saying that David TOOK A STAND.

Now skip down to verses 32-36. This reveals that DAVID TOOK COMMAND.

Now read verse 37. David HAD CONFIDENCE IN GOD’S HAND.

When you read verses 38-40 you will see that David knew his strengths and abilities. He had already killed a lion and a bear. He was an expert at using a sling shot. Think of all the time he had spent watching sheep in the pasture. He very could have passed the time by practicing shooting stones with his sling. The question comes to mind if it would be possible to knock someone out and kill them using this method? Anyone who has seen someone who is an expert in this, would have to say it is. Why then, does it say in verse 40 that David picked up 5 stones? The reason is because Goliath had four sons, as mentioned in 11 Samuel 21:22. There were 5 stones for 5 people. David did not intend to miss. One shot, they are out.

Now continue reading verses 41-44. Goliath despised and taunted David, but in 48-51 David went on to not only kill the giant, but he cut off his head.

So, what are the lessons to be learned from this, particularly as they apply to Christian young people?

One, we are told in First Timothy 4:l2 to “Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.”

Two, your abilities combined with confidence in God is a combination that can’t be beat.

Three, each of you has a special strength, gift, or talent. Use it to honor God and to stand up to those who want to defy your God.

Four, TAKE A STAND, TAKE COMMAND, AND PUT YOUR CONFIDENCE IN GOD’S HAND.

It is my prayer that this short little message might be used in the life of some young person.
