Fear of The Lord?

Exodus 20:20 , NIV: ” Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.” “

Do not be afraid so that the fear of God will be with you? Did I just read that right? It almost sounds like God is contradicting himself or at least that is what the skeptic might say. Or could it be that God is speaking of two kinds fear? Isn’t all fear bad though? Not according to God. Scripture lists a multitude of benefits for those who fear the Lord. Here are just a few from the.

Your Life is Prolonged in Proverbs 10:27; The Lord Confides in You in Psalm 25:1; His Angel Camps Around You and He Delivers You in Psalm 34:7; You have a secure fortress in Proverbs 14:26; You will avoid evil in Proverbs 16:6; You rest content in Proverbs 19:23; You have a fountain of life in Proverbs 14:27; You have the Lord’s compassion in Psalm 103:13; You experience the Lord’s love in Psalm 103:17; You have the Lord’s delight in Psalm 147:11; You have the Lord’s provision in Psalm 34:9; You have the beginning of Wisdom in Psalm 111:10.

There really are great benefits for fearing the Lord, in fact: It’s better to have little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil in Proverbs 15:16. And all you need to do is ask: Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD in Psalm 34:11. I know I am asking God to teach me. What about you?
