Recently I had been talking with a lady about a TV personality, Ellen Degeneres later she said to me, “God said we should not judge people.”

Of course she was referring to:

Matt. 7:1, (Jesus speaking), “Do not judge or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

This is one of those verses that people love to quote but have no idea what it is talking about. It has nothing to do with pointing out a person that is lost. Now granted it is MORE proper to tell the individual personally then to talk about them to another.

But this was the jest of the conversation: She was saying she liked her show and how she did so much for people. I pointed out that that would not keep her from going to hell as she was lost.

Reminds me of Oprah Winfrey that so many people think she is a Christian, why? Because she does a lot of good things for people. But she has openly said she could not believe in the God of the Bible.

What does God say about good works?

Isaiah 64: 6, All of us have become like one who is unclean, all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Galatians 2:16, know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have to put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

Before I go on let me say, God desires and yes it is expected for His children to “do” good works and we are even commanded to do them. But they will NEVER get anyone into Heaven. Only God’s grace given through the death and resurrection of Jesus is it possible.

Titus 3:3-8, At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable to everyone.

James 2: 14-19, What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith and has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you say to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. You believe there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

James points out that even the demons believe so when we read:

John 3:16, For God so loved the world He gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

We realize it is a LOT more than just believe He died for us, that He rose again, that He sits at the right hand of the Father, that is all stuff the demons also know. We have to give Him our lives to do as He sees fit. Yes this isn’t easy, we have that “will” thing that is always getting in the way, so it is a constant process to pick up our cross and follow- Jesus!

James 2: 20-26, You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? You see that his his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God and it was credited to his as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend. You see a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

By these verses we see that NO one can have eternal life through the “things” we do, BUT by the faith in Jesus and what He has done in paying our sin debt. However James make it clear if we have no deeds then our faith isn’t real. Both of these mentioned believed first then acted! We can’t say Jesus is out Lord and continually disobey Him.
