Dare to be a Disciple

Matthew 9:9-13, “As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners” (ESV).

The Only Way to be Righteous

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV).

Even though I would tell others that salvation is a gift that cannot be earned, I felt confused when I read certain verses about righteousness (right standing with God). To me, it seemed as though many verses (especially in the Old Testament) like these appeared to indicate it was about my own right doing.

“Disaster pursues sinners, but the righteous are rewarded with good” (Proverbs 13:21).

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God (Genesis 6:9).

Spiritual Warfare Part 2

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12, KJV).

Here something to consider: just because something sounds spiritual, does not necessarily mean that it is spiritual. In order for something to be truly spiritual, it must line up with the Word of God. In other words, in order for something to be spiritual, it must be scriptural. It is important to spend time in the Word of God because there are things that may sound scriptural, but are not. Please understand that even when using a verse of Scripture in a teaching, it does not ensure that the principle that is being taught is sound. We cannot base a teaching on a single verse; there should be at least two or three verses of Scripture used in proper context. Everything taught must conform to the Word of God; we cannot seek to conform the Word to our teaching. This means all of us need to read and study our Bibles. Whether we are dealing with warfare as in this case, or any other principle, we must study things out while relying on the Holy Spirit to teach us. We must always remain teachable, regardless of how much we think we know. Dovetailing off the previous lesson, a very important tool in warfare is the written Word of God.

A Hurting Soul Speaks Out Part 3

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13).

If you are a leader who have fallen from grace, God is calling you to accountability. It is not too late to start living the way God intended you to live. He has called you as a servant-leader and so, you should no longer abuse your leadership position. Whatever sin you struggle with today, God is able to deliver you. God gave you the authority and placed you in a position from where you can use that authority to be a vessel of honour.

Bread of Life Part 3

Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:43-51 NIV

Redeeming the Time

Are you making the most of your time, as a good steward of God, and in an attempt to use your uniqueness to help advance the Kingdom of God? Take out a piece of paper and make a list of all the activities in which you are involved, other than family or vocation related areas, that take your time, energy, and focus. I am also not talking about wholesome entertainment or recreation, however, even that can be a diversion, though in a good way, because at times we all need to just get away from our problems and routine of living. Then evaluate each of them based upon the following factors.
